From the Archives

As the Red Sox are in the midst of Spring Training, I thought I’d go through some of the many pictures I took last season while working at Fenway Park as a photography intern. Some are photos I never really got around to posting and others I seemed to have passed over during long nights of editing after games. So, in no particular order, here are some outtakes from the 2012 season.

Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park, Utah, Nov. 2, 2012: Located just outside of Moab, Arches National Park has over 2,000 natural stone arches and spans 76,679 acres. Some of these features are Balanced Rock and Landscape Arch, a very thin and long arch with a span of 290 feet. We happened to be there on a really nice day. The blue sky made the shapes and colors of the rock look unreal. And it’s so quiet. Seemed like another planet.

Capitol Reef, Utah

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Nov. 1, 2012: Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park, a geologic monocline (basically a wrinkle on the earth), extends almost 100 miles. The park is filled with cliffs, canyons, domes and bridges. The area was named for a line of white domes and cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, each of which looks somewhat like the United States Capitol building.

Bryce Canyon, Utah

Bryce Canyon, Utah, Nov. 1, 2012: Made up of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, Bryce Canyon is known for its unique geological structures called hoodoos. These limestone rock formations are caused by the erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater. The person in the lower left of the first photo gives a bit of a sense of scale. Like most of the places we visited on the trip, I wish we could have spent more time here. The view was spectacular. The colors are insane. I would have loved to walk through the canyon and explore some more.

Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Multnomah Falls, Ore., Oct. 18, 2012: The tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon, Multnomah Falls is split into two major steps, with the lower falls standing at 69 ft. and the upper at 542 ft. A trail leads to Benson Footbridge, allowing visitors to travel to a platform at the top of the upper falls where there is a beautiful view of the Columbia River Gorge.

Zion, Utah

Zion National Park, Utah, Nov. 2, 2012: Zion National Park features 229 square miles of high plateaus, narrow, deep, sandstone canyons, and the Virgin River along with its tributaries. Among the wildlife in Zion are mountain goats. It’s crazy that they’re able to scale such a steep and rugged landscape. They have a great little hop that they’ve mastered- somehow it gets them from shrub to shrub. These goats were content just munching away while I took a few photos.
